Spiritual Practices for Vaikunda Ekadasi: Beyond Rituals
Vaikunda Ekadasi is one of the most auspicious days in Hindu spirituality. While the traditional view celebrates it as a day for fasting, devotion, and seeking liberation (moksha), there is a deeper, more profound spiritual symbolism for this day that transcends rituals, focusing on internal transformation and self-realization.
Thirumoolar, the great Tamil Siddhar and the author of the Thirumandiram, often emphasized the internal transformation over external rituals.
Let’s explore Vaikunda Ekadasi in light of his teachings.
What is Vaikunda Ekadasi?
Vaikunda Ekadasi is observed on the 11th day (Ekadasi) of the waxing moon during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December–January). It marks the symbolic opening of the "Vaikunta Dwaram" (the gates of Vaikunta), Lord Vishnu's celestial abode. Devotees fast, chant Vishnu's names, and pass through temple gates as a symbolic act of attaining divine grace and liberation.
Spiritual Interpretation
The essence of Vaikunda Ekadasi is not about physically entering the gates of Vaikunta but a state of inner bliss and enlightenment realized by dissolving ignorance and ego and about opening the inner gates to divine consciousness within oneself:
"அகத்தின் நாயகனை அறிந்தில்லை யென்பர்
பகத்தின் நாயகனைப் பார்த்தலால் காணார்
பகத்தின் நாயகனைப் பார்த்தவர்கள் தமக்கு
பகத்தின் நாயகனே சோதியை யானே."
("They do not know the Lord within; they seek Him outside.
But those who see the Lord within themselves realize His light as the true divine.")
"உள்ளகத்தில் உன்னை கண்டால் வைகுந்தம்"
("Vaikunta is found within when you realize your true self.")
Ekadasi as a Symbol of Purification:
The number 11 (Ekadasi) symbolizes the mastery of the 10 senses (5 of perception and 5 of action) and the mind (11th aspect). Fasting on this day is not merely abstinence from food but control over desires and the cleansing of the mind to elevate one's consciousness.
("By abstaining from worldly indulgences, inner purity arises.")
"நாடி உண்ணின் நான்கு யுகம் வாழ்ந்திட
நாடி உண்ணினால் நன்மை மிகும் நாடகமே."
("Fasting with awareness extends one's spiritual life,
And brings great blessings to the seeker.")
The Gate as the Ajna Chakra:
The "Vaikunta Dwaram" symbolizes the Ajna Chakra (third eye), the gateway to higher consciousness. Entering this "gate" means awakening inner wisdom and transcending dualities.
"காணா தவர்க்கு கடவு லொருவனே
காண்பார்க்குக் கண்ணின் கருவி ஒருவனே
காணா தவர்க்கு கடவு லகத்தினிலே
காண்பார்க்குக் கண்ணின் உடம்பினிலே."
("For those who do not seek, the Lord remains far,
But for those who seek, He is the instrument of their sight.
For those unaware, He is hidden within;
For the aware, He reveals Himself within the body.")
Self-Discipline Over Rituals:
While fasting and temple visits are encouraged for discipline, focusing solely on external acts is useless, instead, focus on inner worship through meditation, mantra chanting, and selfless service.
"மெய்யறிந்து மனதை யடக்கிய பின்னே தெய்வத்தை காணலாமே."
("Only after understanding truth and controlling the mind can one see the divine.")
