Saint Thirumoolar on Karma: Understanding Life’s Endless Loan Cycle

Tamil (Original)

பண்டு செய்த வினை பரியாத் தனுவில்
கண்டு தீர்த்திடல் காண்
அண்டர் கோனை அடைந்தார் அல்லாது
முண்டிக் கொள்வது மாறு.

English Translation

The actions (karma) performed in the past do not leave the body.
They must be experienced and exhausted through this very embodiment.
If you do not seek the Lord’s Grace (Awareness), you will keep taking new loans, resulting in endless births.

Karma Is Not Punishment — It Is Accounting

Many people ask:
“Why do bad things happen to good people?”

Thirumoolar gives a brutally honest answer:

Because goodness today does not cancel debts from yesterday.

Karma is not divine anger, not fate playing games, and not injustice.
It is simply cause and effect continuing its balance sheet.

Just like money.

Karma Explained Using the Modern Loan System 💳

Think of karma like financial loans in today’s world.

1. Past Actions = Old Loans

Every action you performed—physical, verbal, mental—creates an impression.

  • Some actions are like home loans (long-term karma)

  • Some are like credit card swipes (quick pleasure, heavy interest)

  • Some are like personal loans (taken in emotion or desperation)

You may not remember when you took them.
But the EMIs still arrive.

2. Present Life = EMI Repayment Phase

This body and this life are where repayment happens.

  • Health issues → EMI from neglect or harm

  • Relationship pain → EMI from emotional karma

  • Financial struggle → EMI from imbalance or misuse

  • Mental suffering → EMI from unresolved patterns

You may be a good person now, but EMIs don’t care about intentions—they care about outstanding balance.

That’s why Thirumoolar says:

“You must repay it in this very body.”

3. Playing Victim = Taking New Loans

When people suffer, many respond with:

  • Blaming others

  • Feeling victimized

  • Acting in anger, jealousy, or despair

This is like saying:

“I’m already in debt—let me swipe the card again.”

Result?

  • Old EMIs continue

  • New EMIs get added

  • Interest compounds

  • Life feels overwhelming

This is how rebirth happens, according to Thirumoolar.
Not as punishment—but as unfinished repayment.

Grace Is Not Loan Waiver — It Is Awareness 📿

Here’s the most misunderstood part.

Grace does NOT magically erase karma.
Grace gives you clarity so you stop taking new loans.

When awareness dawns:

  • You act consciously

  • You respond instead of reacting

  • You stop emotional spending

  • You accept responsibility instead of blame

Grace is like financial literacy.

You may still pay old EMIs,
but no new debt is created.

That is liberation.

Why “Good People” Still Suffer

A person may:

  • Be kind today

  • Be ethical now

  • Be spiritually inclined

Yet still suffer because:

  • Past karmic loans are maturing now

  • Interest period has ended

  • Repayment phase has begun

Understanding this:

  • Ends resentment

  • Removes victim mentality

  • Builds inner strength

  • Restores dignity in suffering

As Thirumoolar subtly teaches:

Suffering understood becomes wisdom.
Suffering resisted becomes bondage.

The Only Real Freedom

You cannot escape karma by:

  • Running away

  • Blaming society

  • Cursing fate

  • Pretending spirituality

Freedom comes when:

  • You repay consciously

  • You stop borrowing unconsciously

  • You live with awareness

That is why Thirumoolar doesn’t promise comfort—
he promises clarity.

Final Reflection

In today’s world:

  • People take loans for phones, weddings, lifestyle, validation

  • EMIs choke their future

  • Stress becomes normal

Karma works the same way.

Live unaware → borrow endlessly → suffer endlessly
Live aware → repay peacefully → become free

Thirumoolar’s wisdom is timeless because human behavior hasn’t changed—only the currency has.
